Specialized Care in Nursing

Our nursing staff provides innovative, empathetic care to every child treated at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM). Our contributions help CHAM to play an ongoing leadership role as one of the top pediatric programs nationally. We are particularly renowned for cutting edge care in the following areas:

  • Kidney disease
  • Hematology-Oncology
  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Neuroscience, which specializes in epilepsy and sleep disorders
  • Newborn ICU

The Ira Greifer Children's Kidney Center at CHAM provides family centered care for children with kidney disease from birth to young adulthood. Nursing care ranges from teaching about a minor kidney problem to replacement therapies for kidney failure including dialysis and kidney transplant. The pediatric nephrology nurse can be found providing child-friendly care in the ambulatory practices, inpatient floors, intensive care unit and even at camp. Wherever the setting, our nurses bring their nephrology expertise and love of children.

Innovative approaches to care

Our nursing services play an important role in the 4800 births that occur through our newborn services department each year. As a regional perinatal center, we support area hospitals by acting as a backup resource to provide intensive care to mothers and newborn infants that these medical centers are not otherwise equipped to offer. Our nurses play an active role in the neonatal ICU, which receives between 500 and 600 admissions annually. Our neonatal ICU regional transport service allows us to safely move babies to CHAM, if they need to receive care here. And we help to provide follow up care for those infants with chronic conditions who must receive ongoing treatment at CHAM.

Specialized care in a wide range of areas

Our nurses are experienced in monitoring our patients in the Neuroscience unit with the most advanced technology available. Patients with epilepsy can be observed by video tape and electroencephalogram (EEG) 24-hours a day. We also have a dedicated inpatient oncology unit that provides multiple supports to both children and their care network.

We create a harmony of state of the art technology and high touch care by also taking the time to provide special touches, such as knitting blankets for the babies in the NICU, or preparing a child's favorite food.
