Nephrology (Children's Kidney Center)
The Ira Greifer Children's Kidney Center is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing family-centered comprehensive care to pediatric patients with kidney problems from birth to adulthood.
The Children's Kidney Center is one of the largest and most experienced Pediatric Dialysis & Transplant Programs in the country, and one of the first and foremost institutions of its kind, both nationally and internationally. Since 1966 the center has been a leader in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric kidney disorders. Our Dialysis and Transplantation services for infants, children and adolescents with end stage renal disease were started in 1972, and one of the first kidney transplants in children was performed here.
A multi-disciplinary team approach with expertise in all aspects of pediatric nephrologic, urologic and transplantation medicine has over 30 years of experience in caring for patients with renal disease and their families to promote normal growth and development.
Survival rates for our pediatric transplant and kidney graft patients are superior to the national average. Many children who received transplants during infancy and childhood at CHAM are now normal teenagers and productive adults.
Our dedicated professional staff includes pediatric dialysis nurses, social workers, nutritionists, transplant surgeons, nurses and coordinators, pediatric urologists, psychiatrists, child life specialists, and a school teacher.
The center is a leader in international and national clinical investigations into the treatment of major kidney disorders in children, including a sophisticated clinical and research effort devoted to hypertension.
