Each year approximately 500 babies are admitted to the NICU at Weiler Hospital. Since the NICU was opened in the 1970s, we have provided care to more than 10,000 babies.
The survival rate among all babies treated in the NICU is over 95%. The NICU is known for its expertise in respiratory care and treatment of premature infants and newborns with surgical conditions.
The Section of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore offers:
- Specialized care of all newborn medical and surgical problems requiring intensive care or diagnostic evaluation.
- Prenatal consultation for high risk obstetric patients.
- Attendance at high-rik deliveries.
- Care of low birth weight and premature babies.
- Care of critically ill full-term babies.
- Specialized care for newborn lung problems, including high-frequency ventilation and nitric oxide treatment.
- Neonatal transport service (718-904-4032).
- Individualized developmental assessment and care of premature infants.
- Developmental follow-up care in collaboration with your child's pediatrician and the New York State Early Intervention Program.
If a problem is identified before your child is born, a neonatologist may become involved to consult with you and your obstetrician in your baby's care during your pregnancy.
We have a full range of diagnostic services available, including genetic services, fetal diagnosis and therapy. When it is known in advance that your newborn will need surgery after birth, you will have an opportunity during the prenatal period to meet with the appropriate specialists and surgeons.
Consultants are available in all pediatric subspecialties, including: Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Heart Surgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pediatric Craniofacial and Reconstructive Surgery, Pediatric Orthopedics, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ear-Nose-and-Throat surgeons, Pediatric Urology.
