The birth of a baby is a time of great anticipation and excitement. Although most pregnancies result in the birth of a healthy baby, approximately 10-15 percent of newborns have a problem that may require the advice and expertise of a neonatologist and care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for special evaluation and treatment.
If your baby is premature or has a serious illness or birth defect, a neonatologist may assist at the time of delivery and in the subsequent care of your baby. A neonatologist is a pediatrician trained specifically to handle the most complex and high-risk situations as well as low birth weight and premature babies.
Some newborns needing intensive care are brought to the NICU from other hospitals by our regional transport team.
State Designated Regional Perinatal Center
We are one of 19 designated regional perinatal centers in New York State. Perinatal center status is awarded by the Department of Health in recognition of a medical center's:
- Excellence in clinical care
- Ability to provide comprehensive perinatal services for high-risk mothers and babies
- Commitment to education and quality improvement
Regional centers are affiliated with other hospitals that provide less specialized services and are considered referral centers for difficult pregnancies and critically ill babies. We were initially designated a regional center in 1985, and our status was renewed in 2001.
Our NICU team is a three-time national winner ranked by U. S. News and World Report's "Best Children's Hospitals." We are also a member of the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network and National Perinatal Information Center – organizations that focus on clinical outcomes, quality improvement and national standards. We participate in several multicentered national and international clinical trials to evaluate treatments to improve survival and reduce long-term complications in premature children.
