Muscular Dystrophy Unit
The Division of Child Neurology at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is proud to house a Muscular Dystrophy Unit that is funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Children referred to the center for the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders benefit from our caring, world-renowned experts. And our national funding allows us to treat all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.
Understanding Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder of the muscles that causes them to become very weak as they are replaced by fatty tissue over time. It usually appears in children under age five. Symptoms vary, but may include:
-
Weakness in the shoulder and pelvic musculature
-
Clumsy movement
-
Difficulty climbing stairs
-
Frequently trips and falls
-
Inability to jump or hop normally
-
Tip toe walking
Children with muscular dystrophy often have related health problems, including:
-
Heart problems
-
Scoliosis
-
Obesity
Careful diagnosis equals quality care
Because muscular dystrophy is a chronic condition with no known cure, it is extremely important to diagnosis the condition as early as possible and to tailor a rigorous treatment plan for each individual, with the aim of preventing the muscles from weakening and encouraging independent movement. Although symptoms vary greatly between children, our doctors' vast expertise allows us to offer the most accurate and specific diagnosis possible through a physical examination and diagnostic testing, including:
-
Blood tests
-
Muscle biopsy
-
Electromyogram (EMG)
-
Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
Empowered children and caregivers
Our doctors and their support staff are committed to empowering children and their parents and care givers. We educate them about the varied treatment options that are available and encourage them to help choose the best approach. Among the most common non-surgical interventions are:
-
Physical therapy
-
Positioning aids
-
Braces and splints
-
Medications
-
Nutritional counseling
-
Psychological counseling
We also recognize the long term psychological impact of living with a chronic condition, and we strive to thoroughly support our patients and their caregivers. We are able to offer referrals to outside resources, such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which can provide financial and emotional assistance. And we form close, lifelong relationships with our patients and their families that enhance the attentive, compassionate care they receive from our physicians and support staff.
