Bone Marrow Transplant

CHAM’s ability to provide the full spectrum of treatments for childhood cancer and blood disorders under one roof is of immense value to our patients and their loved ones. Our expertise in performing bone marrow transplants further increases our arsenal of options in fighting a number of complicated diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, genetic disorders, immune system disease and sickle cell disease.

State-of-the-art technology and comprehensive care

CHAM’s world-class pediatric bone marrow transplant program incorporates the use of state-of-the-art equipment and technology in an integrated, family friendly and intimate environment. We have assembled a team of physicians, specialists and support staff that includes some of the nation’s most formidable experts in pediatric bone marrow transplantation. We offer a full range of support services, resources and expertise in a single location, which helps ensure the continuum of comprehensive care for which CHAM is known.

Bone marrow transplantation is not easy. Transplant patients require lengthy hospitalization, which can be challenging for our patients and their families, both physically and emotionally. From our facilities to our philosophy, CHAM is completely child-centered and family-focused, designed to provide the most pleasant and comfortable environment possible to minimize stress and anxiety for all involved. Our nurses, Child Life workers and support staff are specially trained to help our patients and their loved ones successfully manage this difficult experience.

Excellence in stem cell transplantation

Stem cell transplantation has emerged as one of the most valuable lines of defense against certain pediatric cancers. Some particularly troublesome or recurring forms of cancer respond best to high doses of chemotherapy which, unfortunately, cause damage to patients’ normal blood cells. Stem cell transplantation greatly improves patients’ ability to withstand these increased doses of chemotherapy.

CHAM’s bone marrow transplantation team excels at performing autologous stem cell transplantation.

Autologous stem cell transplantation uses the patient’s own stem cells to fight disease and has proven beneficial in treating some advanced neuroblastoma, brain tumors and advanced sarcomas. CHAM is equipped with the highly specialized expertise and resources necessary to perform autologous transplants, including a unit dedicated specifically to providing the protective isolation necessary for optimum treatment of our patients.

Paving the way for new treatment

CHAM’s team is also committed to researching and developing new agents that will continue to improve the efficacy of bone marrow transplantation. We are collaborating with other institutions to evaluate new medicines and working towards bringing them to clinical trials as part of our ongoing commitment to win the battle against childhood cancer.
