About Moving Mountains: Project for Children with Disabilities
Butler Center's Moving Mountains project is an advocacy program for children with disabilities victimized by sexual and physical abuse.
Kids with disabilities are abused almost three times more often than other children.
At Butler Center we've developed innovative programs and resources to enable children—and disable abuse.
Our initiatives help:
- Prevent abuse of children with disabilities
- Expertly intervene after abuse
- Support prosecution of abusers
"Why are children with disabilities abused so frequently?"
A number of medical, psychosocial and cultural factors predispose kids with disabilities to abuse.
Read 11 factors that put kids with disabilities at high risk for abuse.
"Why don't I hear more about abuse of kids with disabilities?"
Abuse of all children is underreported and difficult to identify. But it's even harder to document abuse of children with disabilities because...
- Signs and symptoms of abuse are often difficult to recognize in children with disabilities
- Kids with disabilities frequently have communications difficulties that make it hard for them to share their stories
- Abuse usually occurs in homes or children's residential facilities
