Harriet Feinman Volunteer Program
The Harriet Feinman Volunteer Program is named after a dedicated Montefiore Auxiliary member who founded our volunteer program in 1984.
Feinman volunteers play a crucial role in helping Bronx children heal after abuse.

Butler Center Kids Need Extra Volunteer Nurturing
The road to healing is often bumpy for a Bronx child who's been battered, neglected or sexually abused. In addition to the violence, our kids must overcome a number of practical, economic and emotional obstacles.
Butler Center kids are often...
- Burdened with additional health problems
- Raised by single mothers
- Challenged by poverty and scarce resources
- Cared for by parents who don't speak English as their first language
- Witnesses to domestic violence against their mothers
Feinman Volunteers Keep Kids from Sliding Through the Cracks
Harriet Feinman volunteers...
- Work closely with our Coordinator of Social Work Services who provides special training for volunteers
- Meet once a week at Butler Center to review children's cases and coordinate follow-up care
- Track children after their first assessment at Butler Center to make sure families make and keep medical and mental health appointments. Harriet Feinman volunteers made more than 14,000 phone calls for our kids last year!
"Can a few hours of my time really make a difference?"
At Butler Center our extraordinary volunteers advocate directly for children. It's often volunteers' determination that tips life's imbalanced scales in favor of an abused kid.
When you volunteer for the Harriet Feinman program, you become "family" for an abused child. You'll get to know children through case studies, staff input and interaction with support service offices.
Sharing your time as a Feinman volunteer lets you:
- Give an abused child the chance to heal and lead a normal, happy life
- Feel the satisfaction of providing hands-on service
- Care for children as if they're your own by arranging medical visits and important follow up services
- Enjoy the camaraderie of weekly meetings with smart, caring fellow volunteers
Make a real difference with a real commitment.
Because volunteer training is comprehensive and time-intensive, we ask volunteers to commit to working one day a week for at least one year at Butler Center.
