Pediatric hepatology is a rapidly advancing discipline with fundamental advances in molecular biology, translational science and clinical medicine in the past few years. Molecular and cellular pathways of the regulation of bile flow have enhanced our understanding of a variety of childhood liver disorders. In addition, cellular mechanisms of hepatocellular injury and repair are advancing our understanding of acute liver injury and repair. This knowledge is coupled with progress in exciting and novel cellular therapies for acute and chronic liver failure. The progress in basic mechanisms of acute liver injury and cholestasis has resulted in improved clinical care for children with liver disorders. Improved diagnostic algorithms have been developed to rapidly diagnose and treat children with cholestasis, including molecular techniques and imaging modalities such as pediatric endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Early and accurate diagnosis and state-of-the-art medical and surgical management of these disorders is resulting in improved outcomes. This unique Pediatric Hepatology seminar will highlight many of these advances in a focused one-day forum.
Intended Audience
Pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatric hepatologists, pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, pediatricians, pediatric nurse practitioners, pediatric trainees and pediatric dieticians
Activity Goals
To update medical providers with state-of-the-art diagnosis and management if children with liver disorders.
After attending the course, participants will be able to:
- Know the etiology and pathophysiology of acute liver injury in children
- Understand some of the basic cellular mechanisms of acute liver injury
- Learn the latest techniques for the molecular diagnosis of a variety of pediatric liver disorders
- Develop understanding of the indication and techniques of cell therapy in pediatric hepatology
- Develop state-of-the-art diagnostic algorithms and care plans for children with cholestasis
- Understand the indications and surgical techniques for children with cholestasis
- Know the long-term outcomes of children with biliary atresia
